DELICIOUS AMBIGUITY

An uncertainty workshop for an uncertain year

SUNDAY JAN 29      1:30 – 5:30     Registration Deadline Jan 23*

Instructor: Pamela Lanza

Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center       515 Cortland Avenue, San Francisco

Embrace uncertainty & spontaneity, let your artwork change in mid-course, create dissonance between the end product & the beginning idea. Instead of documenting a certain concept, experiment with images that abstract them using removal, hiding and downright lying! Experiment with playful tension & suggestiveness, psychological space, contradiction & layered meanings that open all manner of possibilities for future work. Using mixed media, collage, and transparency on paper and wood, discover methods & techniques for generating & grappling with ambiguous images that say the unsaid & augment the meaning of the visual experience. Use your own photographs, drawings or writings as transparencies that you layer, re-work and re-compose over vastly different backgrounds.

“The artist wants to know what things seem to be.” (Bertrand Russell)

Workshop Fee - $150. I provide paint, acrylic medium, ink, water-soluble crayons, string, fiber paper, a selection of collage materials, Rives paper, & wood panels. You bring your own transparencies, additional collage material, & basic tools (such as pencils, pens, scissors, etc.).

* To register, email instructor Pam Lanza ASAP: lalanza@earthlink.net

* Checks must be received by Jan 23.

NOT FLAT
A SURFACE TEXTURE workshop
SUNDAY MAR 5      1:30 – 5:30

Registration Deadline FEB 22

Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center       515 Cortland Avenue, San Francisco

Challenge your imagination and creative potential by using only the objects and materials provided (plus an old t-shirt &d old book that you’ll bring). Collage meets assemblage in this workshop where you’ll create highly textured dimensional surfaces that can be painted, sanded, or glazed , and  find a bevy of almost but not-quite-flat materials such as fabrics , tar paper, wood and metal found objects, vinyl, string, and wire. Stronger materials can be used to break up and alter the common rectangular shape of your artwork, and all materials can be layered for added depth. Let your imagination run wild with the potential of unusual materials to inform your painting and mixed media practices.Workshop Fee is $150 - I provide unusual collage/assemblage materials, glues, acrylic media, selected paint, sandpaper, hardware, and wood panels. You provide an old t-shirt & an old hardcover book (smaller than 10 X 10 ) to cut up, your favorite colors of acrylic paint, and basic tools (brushes, Xactos, etc.).
