Ignite or expand on your drawing skill by combining layers of mark-making with acrylic paint, collage and  ink wash, and taking drawing onto a 3-d object. We will explore combinations of wet and dry media and learn techniques to invigorate a drawing by providing unusual background treatments and learning to edit your work. Weekly slide lectures examine contemporary drawing as well as masters from art history, including many from the Asheville Museum's permanent collection. For all skill levels. Class info and slides emailed weekly in case a class must be missed.

Using a variety of mixed media, students will debunk stereotypes, class and gender identification, and focus on different aspects of identity such as personal environment, fear, dreams, new traditions, internet connections, transiency, and technological advancement. All skill levels; class info and slides emailed weekly in case of a missed class session.

AT THE ASHEVILLE ART MUSEUM

Workshop: Zelda’s Flowers: Painting & Drawing
MARCH 10 — Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Asheville Art Museum
Cost: $75 Museum Members, $85 non-members (includes all materials)

Springtime means flowers, but flowers are not always as they seem: to the artist, they may suggest globes of color, gashes of light, or tentative gestures of changing shape. Using Zelda Fitzgerald’s painting Japanese Magnolias as inspiration, explore what it means to make abstract images from nature – giving them power as essential forms – and study them as iconography. In this workshop, draw, paint, or mix the two to produce works that capture the dance-like gesture and elegance of plants as they bloom. Look at works by Jim Dine, Vincent van Gogh, Robert Motherwell, Alex Katz, Edouard Manet, Emil Nolde, Georgia O’Keeffe, and others, and compare their approaches to Zelda’s magnolias.

Before relocating to Asheville, co-instructors Pamela Lanza and Glenn Hirsch taught for over 20 years at UC Berkeley Extension’s Post-Baccalaureate Art Studio program and the San Francisco Art Institute. Both have exhibited widely at public and private galleries in the US.

Space is limited; register by March 5. Bring a snack/lunch; the Museum will provide drinks. To register online, click here; for more information or to register by phone, call 828.253.3227 x122.
